Making Peace with the Way You Feel

Many of us grew up learning that certain emotions are "bad," inconvenient, or unsafe to express. When hit with a wave of anger, deep sadness, or intense anxiety, our first instinct is often to push it down, overanalyze it, or distract ourselves. We tell ourselves to just get over it, yet the heavy feeling remains, quietly running the show from the background.

Suppressed emotions don’t disappear—they just get louder, showing up as chronic stress, relationship tension, or a deep sense of disconnect.

At Cultivate Mental Health, we offer Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) in Ottawa. This approach is built on a simple, liberating truth: your emotions are not problems to be solved; they are vital pieces of information waiting to be understood. We provide a gentle, profoundly safe space to help you stop running from your feelings, learn how to process them, and use their hidden wisdom to heal and grow.

What is Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)?

Emotion-Focused Therapy is a structured, evidence-based model that treats emotions as our primary internal compass. Our feelings tell us what we need, what hurts, and what boundaries we need to set. When we lose touch with them—or get stuck in painful emotional loops—we lose our way.

Instead of just changing your thoughts, an EFT therapist works with you to safely experience and change your feelings with feelings. Together, we identify the root of your emotional pain, distinguish between healthy responses and old, unhelpful emotional habits, and transform painful states into sources of strength.

How we support you at Cultivate Mental Health

Sitting with heavy, vulnerable emotions can feel incredibly daunting. You might worry that if you finally allow yourself to feel your pain or anger, you will get overwhelmed or swept away by it.

At Cultivate Mental Health, we never throw you into the deep end. We blend the structured framework of EFT with a deeply collaborative, trauma-informed, and relational approach. Your therapist walks right alongside you as an equal partner, helping you pace your emotional exploration so it always feels safe, manageable, and profoundly healing. We don't just talk about change; we create an experiential environment where you can feel the shift happening in real-time.

Our EFT therapists frequently support adults and teens navigating:

Frequently Asked Questions

CBT is highly cognitive and focuses primarily on identifying and changing distorted thought patterns to alter how you feel. EFT, on the other hand, works from the bottom up. It recognizes that emotional injuries often happen before logic kicks in. Instead of trying to "rationalize" your way out of a feeling, EFT focuses on experiencing, processing, and altering the emotion directly at its source.

Yes, absolutely. It is incredibly common to show up to therapy feeling completely numb, blank, or disconnected from your emotions. Often, when life gets overwhelming, our brains use "numbness" as a highly effective protective shield to keep us safe from big, messy feelings. In Emotion-Focused Therapy, we don't expect you to have it all figured out. We treat that exact numbness or confusion as our starting point. Your therapist will help you slow down and look for subtle clues—like a tightness in your chest, a heavy feeling in your shoulders, or a sudden urge to change the subject. By tracking these body-based signals together, we can gently peel back the layers and help you safely identify, name, and make sense of what is happening underneath.

Our emotions are the primary currency of human connection. When we carry unresolved emotional wounds or unhelpful habits—like instantly turning vulnerable fear into defensive anger—our relationships suffer. EFT helps you identify these reactive loops. By learning how to recognize and clearly communicate your primary emotional needs (like your need for safety, validation, or reassurance), you change the way you interact with partners, family members, and friends, paving the way for much deeper intimacy and trust.
